Computer Gaming task 4

Computer Game Story Development

Genre: The genre will Action, Supernatural and fighting.

Audience: 18+. The reason being that the content of the game is very graphic, the language has some swearing (although it’s in a different language). The reason I chose to make my game an 18+ is not only because of the content of the game e.g. the violence or the scenes of a sexual nature, but I chose to make it 18+ because of the story itself. People of a younger age would not even be able to comprehend the story because it’s of a higher intellectual.  However you can adjust the level of complexity in the options menu, the levels go from low to high; Human, Alien, Saviour, Chosen One, God, Ancient and Celestial. The reason I chose to name the levels this way is because the game will no only be based on earth, but on different world, and the game will contain some astrophysics facts. That’s the reason why the game is going be hard to understand for the normal Homosapien.

Narrative Concept:

Goal; in the game you can either play the protagonist’s story, or the antagonist. Depending on whom you choose, the story will end differently.

Story Prologue: “A lot of humans here on Earth say 'its small world'. I don't...because I know what’s really out there. Weirdly though I never used to like this revolting planet, but after living here for so long, it's not half bad. I mean sure I've had some ups and downs for the past 573 years 3hrs and 10 minutes, but I’ve learned to deal with it. Oh, you're probably wondering who I am; well I am…”

List of Characters

Computer Games: Task 6

Plot devices: These are types of event and themes in your story such as revenge, pursuit, disaster, revolt or enigma (mystery) that drive the characters in the narrative.

Pursuit: The people of his kind hunt the main character throughout the universe. He is treated as a traitor. I would definitely say that pursuit is one of the plot devices in my story, the reason being that

Enigma:
You do not know much of the main character’s and the main villain’s past until you get to the middle of the game. A constant plot device in my computer game is competitiveness. This is due to the fact that my game is a two player fighting game. This is why it would be competitive since you face off another player.

Exposition:
The background information and setting for my game's story. My game is set all over the universe, as the protagonist is being pursued. You get to see the different constellations with In terms of the background information; you first start to properly play his story near the middle of the game.

Foreshadowing:
At the beginning you see Cadmus badly injured on the ground, then the game pauses. The screen goes black and you hear Cadmus speaking…this is how you start to see the events of the game. As you play the game Cadmus has flash backs about his past, how he got to the point he did. You also play the story in the flash back as well, it's not only cinematic. I would consider this as foreshadowing because it tells you what position you will be in near the end of the game.

Conflict:
Conflict will definitely be in the game as it’s one of the main themes.
The main conflict of the game is between Cadmus Anu and the Entire Army of his home Planet, ‘The High Council’ led by the main antagonist, Aamon.

Complication:  In my story there will definitely be events that make the initial conflict less predictable and more interesting. There will be some plot twists, events where you won't even know what the outcome would be.

Goals:

There will be targets and objectives that characters in the story will be trying to achieve. For example, when having boss battles the player's target or objective will be to try and defeat the boss. In terms of the 2 Player mode, the only targets and objectives which will be there are to defeat your opponent

Ticking Clock:
The ticking clock plot device is something I wanted to be in my game all along. I will not let the game players to have unlimited time when completing certain challenges like fighting the boss in some if the stages. There will be little challenges or little quests which you can choose to play and they have time limits. However, if you do not play the little challenges or quests, you will lose 5% of your health. So in essence, you really have no choice but to play them, unless you think

Plot twists:
Unexpected and surprising events and reversals in the story of the game.
There will definitely be a few plot twists in my game. For example, the person who has been the good guy all along could very well turn out to be the main villain or working with the villain.

Deus Ex Machine: A character or event that provides a sudden and unexpected solution to one of the game story goals or plot devices.

This particular device I already wanted to use it ever since I started to create my story. Following superhero conventions, the protagonist usually does not kill the villain but just restrains them. However, in my story this does not apply because i want my story to be different, in my story the protagonist DOES kill the villain.

Suspense:
Elements in the story that keep the game player interested and uncertain about how it will end.
In my game there are elements in the story that keep the game player interested and uncertain.
Suspense is a big part of the game because I like to capture my audience.

Resolution:
How the story in the game ends, how plot devices are resolved and which goals are achieved.

At the end of the story, the protagonist kills the antagonist. Peace is restored throughout the universe and Cadmus has been pardoned for his alleged betrayal. However, the story does not end there because there is another part to this.

Conclusion:
In my game there isn't a simple ending, in fact there are three alternate endings. One is an ending from the main protagonist's view and the other from the main antagonist's point of view. The third ending you have to unlock it by completing both the main protagonist's story and the antagonist's.

TV Advertisement: Analysis

Man Of Steel Bluray DVD

1. What is being promoted?

This is an advert by the Warner Bros Studio promoting the Man of Steel movie by releasing the Bluray DVD version of it.

2. Describe the content of the advert (what happens in relation to visuals, sound effects,          music, camera, editing)

In the advertisement they show the trailer for the movie, and at the end show a pack shot of the product.

3. What advertising conventions have been used?
In the trailer they told a little bit of the story and showed some action scenes to try and captivate the audience.

4. What is the USP being promoted within the advert? How is this conveyed?
I would say the unique selling point of the DVD is that it has the option of watching in 3D or Bluray on one disc instead of having two separate discs.

5. What techniques have been used to persuade the audience to respond?
Warner Bros Studio used the action scenes to persuade the audience to purchase the DVD. The technique of using action scenes in trailers causes the audience to be intrigued

6. What other techniques have been used to target the audience? (consider camera, sound, editing etc)

The music used is from the soundtrack itself. This is another way that the audience has been targeted because, it's made by Hans Zimmer who is the best movie score composer in the world at the moment. In terms of the visual effects, they are outstanding. The realisticity

Computer Gaming Task 11: Evaluation

Task 11: Evaluation

For my computer game idea, I created an action, supernatural and fighting game. For my inspiration I used games such as the ‘Tekken’ series, the ‘Street Fighter series, adventure games such as sonic (in terms of the mini games inside the game) and many others.

When I was creating my game I researched into the things that make a game an action game what it is. For example the type of narrative used, or the way the story is told. In order for my target audience to know what the genre of my game is, I looked at the conventions that those type of game have.

For example, action games have some type of conflicts in the game. Adventure game have puzzles and mini game within them. I decided to use quite a few conventions in my story and my game. For example I designed my characters to suit the style of the game e.g. Cadmus has a hooded coat and a flaming sword and Oriax is wearing battle armor and holding a weapon.

Cadmus Anu (Cadmus the Heavenly one)
He is the main Protagonist in the story.

Powers: Control of his body on the molecular level, increase his strength to levels unknown, he is his power. The full extent of his abilities is still unknown to him.

Personality: Kind humble soul.

Planet: Comes from the planet Imperium (Absolute Power)

Cadmus is the main protagonist of the story and he is on the run. He was framed for killing his mother during the war between alchemists and necromancers. He was being controlled by the opposing side and he went on a killing spree, in the process he killed his mother who was also a member of the 'High Council'. After killing his mother, the possession suddenly stopped and Cadmus realised what he had done. Sentenced for the killing of Half the planet Cadmus fled to the lowest part of the universe, and from then looked for a habitable planet...he found Earth.

Name: Oriax
Oriax is the main antagonist of the game.
Powers: Flight. That’s what’s only known about him.
Personality: Determent, Cynical and Bias
Planet: Imperium

Oriax is the main protagonist who is hunting Cadmus across the universe with his army of the 'High Council'.

These conventions will make it easier for the audience to understand that it is an action fighting game. In terms of the way the story is told, I chose to you both text and cinematic (animation). The reason being that if I only used text, the game would getting boring because I know that people don’t like to read as much when playing a game, so that’s why I chose to put some animation just to mix things up.
Once I got the basic idea, I started to think of the things I could add on to develop the concept, so I started to expand the script into an actual story of my own. That turned out to be a really good idea because; the more I went on with the story the more scenes i could imagine. When it came to designing my characters i had to think long and hard about how they would act

My game dialogue and portfolio meet my original intentions 100%. Exactly what I wanted is exactly what I got. In terms of improvements, I would personally make sure that my story doesn't have any plot holes meaning that i will construct my story in a way that it makes sense.
